The Critter Corner Lost Animal Posse

| Losing a pet is one of the most stressful situations we face. Fortunately, the problem occurs rarely for most of us, but there are always lost and found animal notices on any public bulletin board. We can assume that over the years in this area, people have found dozens of animals lost, while other people searched desperately for the same animals; the connection between loser and finder never made. Without a connection, we have saddened families that don't know what happened to their pets, while the lost animals inadvertently end up in our shelters and on our adoption lists. |

| The Critter Corner Lost Animal Posse (one posse for each city/area in Southeast Kansas) is a group of people interested in becoming more efficient at matching up lost and found animals; getting them back to their homes.
You can help this effort by agreeing to be part of the Lost Animal Posse email group for your city/area. Here's all you have to do:
- Be willing to receive an email notice each time we add lost or found animals from your city/area to the Critter Corner list of Animals Lost or Found.
- Be aware of animals lost and found in your area as you go about your daily life, listening for conversations and watching for notices that might help match up a lost animal to its home. If you think you have discovered a situation where an animal is the subject of both a lost notice and a found notice, email us at crittercorner@sekmarketplace.com and we'll contact the parties.
- Check the Critter Corner list of Animals Lost, Found and Needing Homes regularly. We'll have the lost, found and needing homes all sorted together.
- Check public bulletin boards for lost and found notices. If you have some time, jot down phone numbers of people that have lost or found animals. Give them a call and ask them to submit their notice to Critter Corner. Be sure to mention that there is no charge for lost and found listings.
- When you hear people speak of lost or found situations, encourage them to submit notice to Critter Corner as soon as possible. (Lost and found listings are always free.)
- Encourage other people that you know to sign up for the posse. Here, there's definitely strength in numbers. (Imagine the improved odds of lost animals returning home if 100 - 200 people in a small town all had visibility of all the animals lost and found in one list.)
- Tell people you know in other areas of Southeast Kansas about the posse so we can begin to use the same techniques for all cities and towns in our region.
- Promote and use good identification practices. Collars, tags, id chips or tattoos help make for easy connections between lost animals and their homes.
- Have a good photograph of your pet so that in the event it does become lost, you'll have an image to go along with your lost pet notice.
Working together, we can increase the number of lost animals successfully returned to their homes, while reducing the number of "unwanted" animals that end up in our shelters and on animal adoption lists.
